Bob Lucky: SNAKE

Bahrain

Late afternoons I like to walk near what must have been an oasis once. Some Tamils have created a patchwork of vegetable plots beneath towering palms. They grow mostly greens, bitter greens with names I never get right in any language. Today I stop at the sound of conflict overhead. Two mynas and a sparrow, their wings beating in agitation, charge towards a date palm, back off and then hover briefly before charging again. Another movement, an undulation… The mynas attack and for a moment my view of the sky is filled with twisting snake. It lands on a pile of dried palm fronds and quickly disappears.
